What is the difference between a carp rod and a normal fishing rod? - teetotal - china-shower-proudct

I'm not sure what you mean by a "normal" rod. They all have different characteristics and purposes.

There are a number of factors that go into giving a rod its characteristics. The first is the stiffness of the material it is made from. In general, the bigger the fish you are fishing for (or the bigger weights you ar casting) the stiffer the rod will be. Carp rods tend to be quite stiff. The measure of stiffness is called the "test curve". Carp rods generally have a test curve of 2.5, 2.75 or possibly 3.0 lbs.

Second, there is the thickness of the "blank" (the actual rod itself minus all the rings, handle etc). Some rods are hollow (and tend to be thick), others are solid and can then be slimmer. These rods are nicer to cast with as they present less wind resistance. You can often tell a cheap rod by the loud whooshing noise it makes when being cast.

Then there is the way the rod bends. Some rods are designed to bend all the way through to the handle. Others are designed to bend most at the tip. Rods with "tippy" actions include quivertips. Carp rods tend to have an all through action which means that the don't suddenly lock up when playing a big fish (this happens when a rod has done all the bending it can do).

Fourthly, the rings on the rod can vary a lot. Heavier duty line requires bigger rings. Float and quiver tip rods tend to have quite small rings, carp rods have big ones. Carp rods often have rather less rings than float rods - maybe nine as oposed to, say, twelve.

You will also notice that a lot of carp rods tend to have cut-down handles. This is really just a fashion thing, and it has no real impact on the performance of the rod. My carp rods have handles like this, but if I'm honest I'd rather have full cork ones.

So, typically a carp rod will be stiff, solid (as opposed to hollow), with nine or so big rings and a cut down handle. A typical length would be 12 feet.

I use my carp rods for pike fishing too. They do the job very well and cope very well with casting heavy dead baits.
